About us

The British Council was founded as a voluntary association in 1934 with the name of the British Committee for Relations with other Countries. 'Committee' was soon changed to 'Council' and in 1936 the whole title was shortened to the British Council. It has stayed that way ever since. We were formally incorporated by royal charter in 1940 and granted a supplemental charter in 1993.

The British Council appointed its first overseas representatives (in Egypt, Poland and Portugal) in 1938 and now operates in 227 cities in 109 countries around the world. custom folder printing

Since opening its office in Sofia in 1991, the work of the British Council in Bulgaria is a form of cultural and educational co-operation in a very broad sense. It is about how people develop.

We run English classes for a fast growing number of students. These include members of the Bulgarian military, as part of its NATO accession programme, and Bulgaria’s team of EU negotiators. We also run language and professional examinations, which are very useful internationally recognised qualifications both for students and for employers.

We work very closely with the Bulgarian educational system in the teaching of English in Bulgarian schools and higher education, and in a wide variety of projects.

Under our active arts programme we bring events and individuals to show what is going on in contemporary UK and, just as often, to work with Bulgarian counterparts. We also encourage Bulgarian artists in all art forms to learn about and to experiment with the UK art repertoire.

In addition to this ‘visible’ work, we work with professional groups of people in areas which are connected with European Union enlargement and the development of the civil society in Bulgaria, sometimes as managers of projects funded by donor agencies. Recent examples include management consultants, dentists, doctors, insurance agencies, journalists, re-training agencies and small and medium enterprise managers. They are all people anxious that their professional standards be explicit and recognised throughout Europe. We also work on minority rights, legal rights, family rights and child protection.
